E10 petrol and the additional problems

In the meantime, several countries have switched to the new fuel type with the designation E10. This is also the case in the Netherlands. From 1 October 2019, pump holders are obliged to carry the E10 petrol. The provision of E10 fuel is only mandatory for filling stations with two or more petrol filling installations. This obligation does not apply to a petrol station that offers one product.

But what is E10 and is it true that the fuel is not suitable fort the majority of cars?

To answer that question; the majority of (modern) cars can run on E10, but not without occasional problems Below you will find answers to many questions. If you already know that your car is not suitable for running on E10 (fuel with bioethanol), Bardahl has the solution for you. With Bardahl Top Oil (for petrol engines) you have a fuel additive with which you can easily refuel E10 fuel.

  1. What exactly is E10 petrol?
  2. E10 is a mixture of at least 90 percent fossil fuel and up to 10 percent sustainable bioethanol. The E stands for ethanol and the 10 indicates the percentage of it. The idea behind it is that it reduces dependence on fossil fuels, without having to adapt cars to a different type of fuel. As a result, cars that run on E10 petrol emit an average of 2 percent less CO2. Euro95 is actually E5. A maximum of five percent bioethanol is added to this particular fuel.

  3. Is E10 bad for your car?
  4. A large part of the cars can run on E10 petrol without any problems. The Dutch fleet can have problems because the bioethanol affects some rubber and plastic seals, seals and gaskets. The ANWB advises to only refuel this fuel if your car is suitable for it. Otherwise, always choose the regular Euro 95 (if available) or the premium fuel, such as Esso Synergy Supreme+, Shell V-Power, BP Ultimate and Total Excellium.

  5. Can you trust the E10 check?
  6. The data on the cars included in the E10 check come from data made available by ACEA " the European umbrella organization of car manufacturers " and from information from the official Dutch importers. When in doubt, it is advisable to ask your own car dealership or garage for advice.

  7. E10 may be cheaper, but it would also be less economical than normal petrol. Is that correct?
  8. Yes, consumption does increase slightly. The energy content of bioethanol is slightly lower and the engine therefore needs just a little more of it. It is a difference of between two and five percent. An Australian study once showed an average increase consumption of 2.8%; the renowned German magazine Auto, Motor und Sport o spoke of figures around two percent. The amount of that percentage also depends on the condition of the engine and the driving style and "conditions.

  9. Safe E10 petrol fuelling?

Bardahl Top Oil lubricates and protects the upper part of the piston and keeps the fuel system clean. This fuel additive is suitable for preventive use with ethanol-containing gasoline such as E10. In addition, Top Oil is very suitable for dry fuels such as LPG, natural gas but also (bio) diesels.
